Chicago is not an inexpensive dining destination. However, it is one of the very best culinary cities in the world. In the last 10 years, I watched it grow from a meat-and-potatoes town to a Top Chef contestant (and winner) wonderland. This city has hosted huge food festivals such as Chicago Gourmet and Chicago Food & Wine. As if all of that is not impressive enough, the James Beard Foundation awards were held here this year for the very first time, after a long stay in New York. So, where can you find a really great bargain here? I suggest you try the Wednesday $10 burger and beer special at Trenchermen.
Trenchermen is a super cool bar and restaurant in Chicago’s Wicker Park neighborhood. It is located just 1 block west of
the Damen ‘L’ stop along the CTA Blue Line. So, grab your Ventra Card and hit the rails, kids!
I’ve heard rave reviews of Trenchermen from food critics and food bloggers alike. They have a seasonal, American menu and there is something for just about every palate. I hear that the brunch and the Trench Double Burger are amazing and I will be back for those. You see, yesterday was Wednesday and I came for the $10 burger and beer special. Here’s how my bargain went down:
Every Wednesday Trenchermen works with a local brewery for the right beer to pair with their featured burger which is available only in the Trenchermen Bar. Last night, I had the Koval Whiskey Burger. It was made with grass-fed beef and caramelized onions that were glazed in Koval whiskey. It was topped with a bit of Tilamook aged cheddar and served on a soft sesame seed bun.
This burger hit my table steaming hot and cooked to my desired medium-rare temperature. The whiskey glazed onions were perfection. I can never have enough caramelized onions. Drooling yet? There were housemade potato chips and a cute little bag of spicy popcorn.
The draft beer pairing was a Miskatonic Wise Fool American pale ale and it was delicious. Usually, I do not really enjoy pale ales but this one I would have again.
The thing that made this burger and beer special even better was that I had it in an historic, 1920’s Russian bathhouse. The building is not only an important immigrant landmark in Chicago but it is beautiful both inside and outside. Plenty of tiles, wood, comfy booths and moody lighting. The huge bar area is less formal than the main dining space and it has a real community feel which is evocative of the true intent of immigrant bathhouses [ minus the baths 😉 ]
Folks, the Wednesday $10 burger and beer specials at Trencherman are a real deal in a town with so many fabulous chefs, upscale menus and stellar digs! I defy you to find a better one. You can check out their website under “Happenings” for the upcoming, featured burger and beer specials.

In keeping with the spirit of Feeding Off The Rails, I encourage you to leave your car at home and take the CTA Blue Line to Trenchermen. Save on gas. Avoid traffic, road rage and parking. Reduce pollution. Don’t drink and drive!
