It’s been six months since my first visit to The Duck Inn on Chicago’s south side which is owned by Chef Kevin Hickey of Bottlefork (Closed as of October 2017). After that experience, I blogged that they have the best short rib I’ve eaten in Chicago. I stand by that proclamation. But, what about the rest of the menu? Since it was an unseasonably chilly autumn day, I hopped the CTA Orange Line to The Duck Inn. It is located 7 blocks west
and 3 blocks north of the Halsted ‘L’ stop at the corner of Eleanor and Loomis. The #62 Archer Ave bus stops just 3 blocks south of the restaurant at the corner of Archer and Loomis.
I have been anxious to try the duck here (obviously!) which is made for two people to enjoy. However, once again, I was dining solo. That dish will have to wait, until one of my duck-loving friends gets loose enough to join me. No worries, though. I knew Chef Kevin Hickey had me covered with many other tempting menu items. Here’ how my dinner went down:
Earlier in the day, my Facebook feed indicated that The Duck Inn was featuring a special roasted cauliflower bisque. Since soup is my favorite food group, it was a no-brainer that I should begin my meal with this. Excellent call!
Two kinds of cauliflower, green and yellow, were used in the preparation of this soup which was topped off with rye croutons. It was a hot, creamy, earthy, satisfying delight.
Next up, I decided to have the shrimp and duck spring rolls with a sweet chili dipping sauce. Wow! I am not exaggerating when I say that there are many Asian restaurants that can learn a lesson from The Duck Inn about how to make a super light and crispy spring roll which packs great flavor. Although this is a bar snack, paired with the cauliflower bisque, it was hearty enough to fill me up. It also provided me with a sneak peek at the duck here. Loved it!
The Duck Inn is a warm and welcoming neighborhood spot with one of the friendliest staff in Chicago. It also has the best backyard patio in the city. You really feel like you are dining in someone’s home. Since Chef Kevin was raised in this neighborhood and he still lives here, you truly get a sense that The Duck Inn is his love letter to this Bridgeport spot.

In keeping with the spirit of Feeding Off The Rails, I encourage you to leave your car at home and take the CTA Orange Line or the #62 bus to The Duck Inn. Save on gas. Avoid traffic, road rage and parking. Reduce pollution. Don’t drink and drive!
