Happy New Year, everyone! My first post of 2016 is about how I spent the very first day of the year. I met some beautiful friends for Afternoon Tea at Palm Court in The Drake Hotel in Chicago. When my friend, Happy, suggested this idea, I could not think of a more elegant and civilized way to kick off the new year.
The Drake Hotel is an historic 1920’s, Beaux-Arts hotel located in Chicago’s Gold Coast. The epitome of high-society, it has welcomed its share of movers, shakers and royalty. It is located just 4 blocks north of the Chicago ‘L’ stop and 5 blocks south of the Clark/Division ‘L’ stop, along the CTA Red Line. The #3 King Drive bus stops at Chicago Avenue.
Here’s how our Afternoon Tea went down:
Afternoon Tea generally consists of pots of tea, finger sandwiches, breads, scones, pastries and seasonal desserts. The tea selections at Palm Court are custom-made. I had the most wonderful Garden blend with mango and papaya notes. So luscious! Each guest in our party selected their own pot of tea and a tower of tasty treats was shared among the 4 of us.
The food available during Afternoon Tea at Palm Court is unlimited. You can even select which particular sandwiches and pastries you would like to include in your tower of treats. I liked the lobster salad sandwiches but the salmon and cucumber sandwiches were a favorite, too. The jam and lemon curd served on the side for the biscuits and scones were really delicious. The lovely servers are happy to keep bringing more of your favorites 🙂 That’s a really nice deal for the cost of this fabulous tradition ($45 adults, $22 children).
The room at the Palm Court is stunning. As it was the Christmas and New Year holidays, the room was draped in white with a gorgeous centerpiece above the fountain in the middle of the room. It looked like a winter wonderland 🙂 My friends and I sat at a very cozy table surrounded by 2 club chairs and a settee lounge.
A harpist is on-site at Palm Court from Wednesday – Sunday to serenade you while you relax and enjoy your Afternoon Tea. If you partake of this fabulous tradition from November 30 – January 3rd, the harpist performs daily. During the 12 days of Christmas, carolers will serenade the room 🙂
Palm Court in The Drake Hotel is located at 140 E. Walton Pl. Afternoon Tea is served daily from 1-5pm. A harpist perfoms Wednesday – Sunday. Reservations are recommended. Click here for more information.
In keeping with the spirit of Feeding Off The Rails, I encourage you to leave your car at home and take the CTA Red Line or #3 King Drive bus to Palm Court in The Drake Hotel. Save on gas. Avoid traffic, road rage and parking. Reduce pollution. Don’t drink and drive!
