Cochon Volant might just have the best burger in Chicago. Stay tuned!
I am working on a “Top 5 Burgers in Chicago 2015” list which I will share at the end of this year. As you can imagine, this kind of thing takes a lot of research. No worries. I am up to the task 🙂 Last night I made it over to Cochon Volant at the Hyatt Centric in The Loop to check out their cheeseburger.
This place is located just 2 blocks west of
the Monroe ‘L’ stop along the CTA Red Line. It is also 1 block west of the Monroe ‘L’ stop along the CTA Blue Line.
Cochon Volant is a French bakery and brasserie which is serving up some traditional French bistro fare including 5 different steak frites, escargot, omelettes, croque monsieur and French onion soup. They even have chilled shellfish towers. All of the dishes that passed by my table looked incredible. I know that it sounds strange to order a cheeseburger at a French bistro. However, there has been a bit of buzz about this burger lately. I needed to vet it for myself.
I ordered a Daisy Cutter draft to sip on while I perused the menu and pondered dishes I would order during my next visit. I am always planning my next meal 😉 And then, I spotted it. Les Cheeseburger Royale. Ready?
This baby is made with prime dry-aged beef (double patty), crispy thick-cut bacon, confit onion, American cheese, dijonnaise and housemade pickles. Crunchy, house-cut fries rode shotgun. It almost took my breath away when Julien, my server, brought it to my table.
I ordered my cheeseburger medium-rare and that is exactly how it was presented to me. The meat had incredible flavor. The juices. I mean fat. I mean goodness that is the combination of the beef, pork, cheese, confit onions and dijonnaise is outrageously delicious. The bun supporting this cheeseburger is soft and surprisingly capable. It soaks up the juices perfectly without collapsing under the weight it carries.
The space at Cochon Volant is lovely. There is a main dining room and a cool front room in the bar area which has a fun vibe. The decor is very much in keeping with traditional French brasseries I have been to. I cannot wait to come back to try the rest of the menu. I was eyeballing the croque madame egg rolls with super hot French mustard!
The cheeseburger at Cochon Volant may be one of the very best burgers I have had in Chicago. Will it make the cut for my Top 5 Burger list for 2015? You’ll just have to stay tuned. Interested in some other contenders for my list? Read my reviews of Au Cheval and Kumas Too.
Cochon Volant is located at 100 W. Monroe St. It is open every day for break, lunch and dinner. Brunch is served on Saturday and Sunday. Click here to view the menu and more.
